Rich Toward God

Jesus continues his ministry of proclaiming the Kingdom of God through teaching, miracles, and deliverance of demonic forces. There are several familiar passages and parables this week. These draw a contrast between the religious moralism of the day and the Kingdom of God. One of those familiar passages is Jesus being the Good Shepherd, and this exclusivity incites the religious leaders to again try to kill Jesus. Another familiar parable is the Good Samaritan. He exposes the religious leader's hypocrisy. Jesus continues to make the broader point that God’s kingdom is better than wealth, status, or even spiritual power. You can either focus on being rich in this world or rich towards God, and that is the Big Picture.

Each week, as you take in the Bible, find some friends to talk it out. You can follow this simple guide to help. First, R.E.A.D. and P.R.A.Y. on your own. Then, meet with friends to share what you've learned.

R - Repeated words

E - Examine and mark

Bible Reading Plan - Week 19

Daily Prayer Plan – Week 19

START IT.

We're reading the Bible together in 2025 to see how Love Shows Up from the Old Testament and into the New Testament. How do we understand so many stories and lessons through the entire Bible while trying to stick to the "sacred timeline"? The answer is the big picture. If we get the big picture, we get the story the Bible is trying to tell. From Sunday's message or The Big Picture Bible Reading Plan this week in the Gospels of Luke and John, what is impacting you the most? How has praying daily through the Psalms impacted you? Was there a word, phrase, Bible verse, or theme that impacted you?

STUDY IT.

Read Luke 10:9. What is the mission of the ‘72’?

Read Luke 10:10. What is the ‘72’s response supposed to be to those who reject their message? What does this tell us about the separation between those people and God’s kingdom if even the dust from their town is not supposed to stay on the feet of the messengers?

Read Luke 12:16-21. What is the difference between being rich toward God and being rich toward the world?

Read Luke 12:29-32. Why does the flock not have to be afraid of not having material blessings?

Read Ephesians 1:5-6, 11-12. What does it mean that ‘God delights to give you the kingdom’ from Luke 12:32? What kind of kingdom is this?

SHARE IT.

Read Galatians 6:7-8 and Luke 12:40, 45-46. How are you ready for the coming judgement?

Read Galatians 6:9-10 and Luke 12:37, 43-44. Having been saved through faith, how do you not grow weary of doing good?

Read Luke 10:17, 20. Do you rejoice more in your name being written in heaven than in God’s provision or power working through you?

Read Luke 10:41-42. What false priorities cause you anxiety? How does Jesus free you from this anxiety?

What parable (Good Shepherd, Good Samaritan, Rich Fool) this week means the most to you personally? Do you connect with one more than another?

FINAL THOUGHT

It is stunning to think that it is God’s good pleasure to give His people His Kingdom. His people can be free of anxiety and full of joy when they remember that this life is passing away and the more real and eternal Kingdom of God has been given to them as an eternal inheritance. Why would God do this? Ephesians 1 says for the ‘good pleasure of His will’ and for the praise of His ‘glorious grace’ and praise of His ‘glory.’ Jesus’ sheep have been called by His voice from spiritual death to life, and now, in response to new life in Christ, His sheep follow His voice. They are joyfully awaiting the Master’s return, all the while freely giving their treasure now for imperishable treasure in heaven to the glory and praise of God.
