  • After Jesus is baptized, how does he begin his ministry in Matthew 4? Why is this significant to us as followers of Jesus?

  • In Matthew 4, Jesus spent time with people. What kind of people? Does this resonate with you? How?

  • Read ahead to Matthew 5:1-2. What caused Jesus to move to the mountainside? And what does he do next? How important is teaching to Jesus?

  • In Matthew 5-7, Jesus is going to teach his first recorded talk (sermon). It's going to start with true happiness (human flourishing). What's the connection to seeing the crowd and starting to teach?

  • Why do you think Jesus starts his teaching ministry by addressing happiness? Why is happiness so hard to find?

  • Which of the following points from Sunday impacts you the most?

    • To be happy, you need to listen (to Jesus)

    • To be happy, you need to decide you need help (from Jesus)

    • To be happy, you need to know Jesus sees you

    • To be happy, you need to learn from Jesus (about to teach)

  • What does happiness and human flourishing have in common? Is there anything different?

  • Why did Jesus first call people to repent (complete change of direction)? What has this looked like in your life?

  • Do you believe Jesus teaches true happiness? How would we know?
