Jesus is Better

ree

This week will cover the book of Hebrews. The author is unknown, but there are varying opinions on who it might have been. Whoever the author was, both knew the disciples and had an extensive knowledge and understanding of the Old Testament. The author also knows that the recipients of the letter have an extensive knowledge of the Old Testament. This book in the Bible is believed to be a letter to messianic Jews or Jewish believers in Jesus who are suffering persecution. There are also other groups addressed in the letter that include Jews who had not believed in Jesus but had heard of Him. The book/letter is centered around the idea that Jesus is better or superior, and the author will argue this idea over and over. Jesus is better than any other group, person, or covenant that had come previously, and therefore remaining faithful to Him despite persecution is infinitely better. That is the Big Picture.

Each week, as you take in the Bible, find some friends to talk it out. You can follow this simple guide to help. First, R.E.A.D. and P.R.A.Y. on your own. Then, meet with friends to share what you've learned.

Week 48

Bible Reading Plan

Daily Prayer Plan

START IT.

We're reading the Bible together in 2025 to see how Love Shows Up from the Old Testament and into the New Testament. How do we understand so many stories and lessons through the entire Bible while trying to stick to the "sacred timeline"? The answer is the big picture. If we get the big picture, we get the story the Bible is trying to tell. From Sunday's message or The Big Picture Bible Reading Plan this week in the books of Hebrews, what is impacting you the most? How has praying daily through the Psalms impacted you? Was there a word, phrase, Bible verse, or theme that impacted you?

R.E.A.D. - Repeated words. Examine & mark. Ask what I learn about God? Do.

STUDY IT.

Read Hebrews 10:32-34. What is the context of the letter? Read Hebrews 10:35-39.What is the encouragement of the letter? Read Hebrews 1:1-3. What is the basic argument that will be worked on in the remaining chapters of the letter?

Read Hebrews 1:4-5 & Hebrews 3:1-6. Who is Jesus superior to and why? Read Hebrews 2:9 &  Philippians 2:8-9. How did Jesus show Himself better?

Read Hebrews 7:11, 19, 23-25. How is Jesus a superior High Priest? Read Hebrews 7:26-28. How is the High Priest Jesus described as being better?

Read Hebrews 7:21-22, 8:7, 9:15, 24-28. How is Jesus a superior covenant and sacrifice? Read Hebrews 11:16, 35, 40. What has Jesus’ sacrifice secured for believers before and after His earthly life?

Read Hebrews 10:38-39. How is the believing Christian described? Read Hebrews 3:16-19, 6:4-8, 10:26-31. How is the person who has knowledge of God but no saving faith described?

SHARE IT.

Read Hebrews 3:12-15. How is this warning applicable to you this week? What are the Do’s you see in this passage?

Read Hebrews 5:11-14. What disciplines did you practice this week to make sure this passage does not describe you?

Read Hebrews 9:11-14. What did Jesus’ blood secure for you to do this week?

Read Hebrews 9:15. What will you receive due to Jesus’ sacrifice? How might that encourage you in difficult circumstances this week?

Read Hebrews 10:19-25. What are the Do’s for you in this passage this week?

FINAL THOUGHT

Hebrews 11 goes through the Hall of Fame, so to speak, of Old Testament believers. The chapter recounts the familiar stories of all the heroic faithful of the Old Testament. There might be a part of you that wishes your name might be found in this chapter, or that you could be like them. The truth is that there is only one hero of scripture, and that is the one that all put their faith in. Hebrews 11:39-40 reads, “39 All these were approved through their faith, but they did not receive what was promised, 40 since God had provided something better for us, so that they would not be made perfect without us.” What was that something better? In these last days, God has spoken by His Son. It was the knowledge that Jesus is the author and perfector of our faith, and Jesus is the guarantor of our inheritance, the Faithful Son and High Priest building His Temple out of His people by His perfect blood. Through faith, all the Old Testament ‘heroes’ are counted as worthy of receiving the covenant promises, and also all believers after Christ, through today, through faith, are counted as worthy of receiving the covenant promises. This is not because of the greatness of your faith, but rather the greatness of the One whom your faith is in, Jesus Christ. Jesus is better.
