John’s Letters

This week will include the conclusion to the Elder’s letters and then on into the Revelation of Jesus Christ. We will take the opportunity to review 1st-3rd John, and then launch into Revelation for the remainder of the year. This is a review from our time earlier this year in the Gathering. Remember that the letters are thought to be written by John the apostle, and that he wrote to a group of house churches around Ephesus. John writes in a circular way to emphasize his point. Overall, the letters are written to address false teachers who were in the church and have left. John is clearing up confusion and reminding the churches of who Jesus is and what He taught. That is the Big Picture.

Bible Reading Plan
Daily Prayer Plan
START IT.
We're reading the Bible together in 2025 to see how Love Shows Up from the Old Testament and into the New Testament. How do we understand so many stories and lessons through the entire Bible while trying to stick to the "sacred timeline"? The answer is the big picture. If we get the big picture, we get the story the Bible is trying to tell. From Sunday's message or The Big Picture Bible Reading Plan this week in the books of 2 John, 3 John and Revelation, what is impacting you the most? How has praying daily through the Psalms impacted you? Was there a word, phrase, Bible verse, or theme that impacted you?
R.E.A.D. - Repeated words. Examine & mark. Ask what I learn about God? Do.
STUDY IT.
Read John 20:31. Why was the Gospel of John written?
Read 1 John 3:2-6. How do “we know that we know Him”?
Read 2 John 1:7-9. What is the issue John is addressing in his second letter? Who is causing confusion? Read 2 John 1:10-11. What is the instruction on how to keep from confusing others about Jesus?
Read 3 John 1:5-8. What is Gaius being praised for? Read 3 John 1:9-10. What is Diotrephes being condemned for?
Read 1 John 5:1-5. How does John summarize belief and obedience?
SHARE IT.
Read 2 John 1:4. What does it mean to “walk” in the truth? How do you walk in the truth this week?
Read 2 John 1:8. In light of deceivers, how do you watch yourself so you “don’t lose what you have worked for” this week?
Read 2 John 1:7, 10-11. If a person claims to be a Christian missionary and then denies Jesus, how should you handle it? What would be hard for you about this teaching?
Read 3 John 1:5. What makes involvement with the church vital about acting faithfully?
Read 3 John 1:10-11. What are you to imitate? How might this help you this week?
FINAL THOUGHT
John is writing over and over again to insure that the Gospel of the Lord Jesus remains unpolluted or twisted from what Jesus Himself taught. It might be comforting to understand that the challenges we face contending for truth today were also faced by the earliest believers. What also has not changed in Jesus’ unwavering sovereign protection and commitment to building His church. “16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” 17 Jesus responded,“Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but my Father in heaven. 18 And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overpower it. “ (Matthew 16:16-18)
