Don't Follow Your Heart

I have good news. In a world full of competing voices telling us how to live, we can trust the heart of God. How many times have you watched a show and heard the advice “just follow your heart”? That is the worst advice ever!! The book of Numbers shows us just how destructive (and even deadly) that advice can be. There is opposition to God’s plan, rebellion, complaint, fear, loss, defeat, a plague, and death. Why? Because the people followed their wicked, selfish hearts. And all along, a faithful, steadfast, holy, all-powerful, merciful, loving God was present with them. He was guiding them every step of their journey. Even though his chosen people struggled in sin, God graciously and continuously provided a way for his people to find life.

Week 10

Bible Reading Plan

Weekly Content Questions Every week, you'll see the same five content questions. Use them as a guide as you read the scriptures. Pray for consistency in your Bible reading.

  1. Who are the main characters in this text, and is there anyone you can relate to?

  1. Is there anything from this text that we are to do (obey, believe, heed, or follow)?

  1. What do you learn about God in these chapters, and how has that changed what you believe about Him?

  1. What do these passages reveal about human nature, sin, and our need for God?

  1. What’s the Good News found in this text?

Application Questions

Every week, you'll see five unique application questions. Use them to help live out what you're learning in scripture. Pray for life transformation.

  1. Is it ever hard for you to see God’s glory? Where and when have you experienced God’s glory? (i.e. in his protection, discipline, grace, etc)

  1. Are there times or circumstances when you think God would be willing to compromise on holiness? What tempts you to question his holy standard?

  1. When have you followed your heart rather than God's word and how did that turn out? What did God teach you through it?

  1. Do you “walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him?” (Col 1:10) What fruit in your life would support this?

  1. Which of the attributes listed in Colossians 3:12-17 do you need to “put on” this week? Who will you share this with for accountability?

Final Thought

Sin separates us from God, so all of us need his grace. What's amazing is that God is both the giver and the gift! He fulfills our greatest need in Jesus! That is good news.
